Oranges, Easy Cheese, and Newspapers

Hey! I’m Ethan, and, as you could have guessed, I am a member of Writer's Block! I absolutely adore writing and all of the freedom you can achieve through it. Throughout Writer’s Block we often do different types of exercises. In this one, I was given a few random objects, those being the focus of the poem. The poem itself is centered around the small details of a house after the owners have passed. I hope you enjoy it!

Oranges, Easy Cheese, and Newspapers

A pile of brown moldy oranges sit embarrassed on the counter-top

Soon there will come a lingering stink

Running itself thinly across the walls

After a while

. . .

Nobody knows where the scent is coming from

A can of Easy Cheese stands proudly in on the refrigerator door

Soon time will waste away the canister

Boasting itself upon its synthetic taste

After a while

. . .

It’s time will come, and it will join the oranges

Yesterday’s Wall Street Journal remains at the driveway

Soon with it, the journals of days prior

Amassing into a wet paper mess

After a while

. . .

The concrete will make its peace before they are forever united

Your brown slippers in the closet

Your oven empty and cold

The ceiling fan grows ever more dusty

And the garage door old

After a while

. . .

The house will be renewed

The oranges trashed

The Easy Cheese trashed

The pavement washed
